Steven Joseph La Plant Obituary - May 2005

Steven Joseph La Plant, 38, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in the loving presence of his immediate family.

The son of Joanne Florence Greatens and James Joseph La Plant, Steven was born on February 28, 1967 in Green Bay.  After graduating from Abbott Pennings High School in 1985, Steven went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in History from Marquette University in 1989 and a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology from the School of Spiritual Psychology in Milwaukee.

Steven married his wife, Helle Nordahn, in Vejle, Denmark in 2002. They resided in Milwaukee, which was their home for many years.

Steven followed his entrepreneurial instincts, leaving legislative work in the healthcare industry to launch a successful career as an independent marketing communications consultant. Most recently, he created and launched a global strategic communications company with fellow business partners and was working to grow that business before he fell ill.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Steven was passionate about flying and aviation, having obtained his private pilot’s license several years ago. He was also an avid traveler and photographer who spent considerable time in Europe, South America, China and North Africa.

Steven lived his life with great energy and purpose, never shying from the opportunity to more fully understand and learn from his experiences and the people around him. Steven was a natural leader and communicator, who brought clarity, humor and grace to all of his interactions — both personal and professional. His sensitivity, generosity, and compassionate nature touched many lives.

Steven is survived by his wife; his father; his brother, David (and wife, Julie); his sister, Lisa (and husband, Stephen Bolger); and his brother, Chad.

He was preceded in death by his mother, maternal grandparents Ann and Raymond Greatens, paternal grandparents Rosemary and Joseph La Plant, and niece Viviane Elise Bolger.

A memorial service will be held at Old Saint Joseph Church on the Saint Norbert College campus at 100 Grant Street in De Pere on Friday, June 3, 2005 at 11:00 am. Roger VandenBusch will be officiating. Entombment will take place at the Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.  Proceeds directed to the family will go to Gilda’s Club in Milwaukee and Faith House in Houston, Texas.

Steven’s family wishes to thank all of their dear friends and relatives who have made their presence felt during this past year.  Your outpouring of love and support in his fight against lymphoma was a testament to the way in which Steven cared for those in his life.  We also express our gratitude to the oncology staff of Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee and the MD Andersen Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

(Steven's Obituary was prepared by his sister, Lisa, and her husband Stephen.  It appeared on The Green Bay Press Gazette's Obituaries webpage on May 31, 2005.  Link to a PDF of that site.)
